May Band Notes
I can't believe that it is the end of the school year already. May is a hectic, fun time for all of us that are in school. We have concerts, exams, deadlines and finally, summer. Please note the dates and deadlines listed below.
Concerts are here. Sixth grade kick this round off with their concert on May 1, next is the eighth grade band on May 7, and finally the seventh grade band and seventh grade jazz band on May 14. Along with that, the seventh grade jazz band will be playing on May 3 for the Community Project Showcase at 6:00. I am so proud of the work that the kids do in preparation for their concerts.
This year's end of the year looks a little bit different than years past. This year I need to collect ALL school instruments, regardless of whether or not the student is continuing in band. If they are an eighth grader and continuing, then they should contact Mr. Hendricks about borrowing an instrument. If they are a sixth or seventh grader and are going to continue in band next year, I will mark their instrument with their name and it will be waiting for them in the fall. It is super important that all school instruments are returned so that I can complete inventory by the end of the year. This is very very important.
Elitches is coming up on the last day of school for seventh and eighth grade band members. Permission forms are already out. We'll need about 8 chaperones in order to go so come on out and spend the day with us. Students need to be getting an A or B in band class at the time that slips are due in order to qualify to go, so students should have gotten all their late work in by last Friday since that was the deadline.
Check the Calendar Page for any upcoming deadlines or important dates.
Finally a thank you to all students and parents for a fantastic year of music. We did four sets of concerts, hosted the MS Jazz Night, hosted the MS Solo and Ensemble Festival, hosted the MS Honor Band rehearsal, and participated in Longmont's Halloween Parade with NHS. It was a great year and I feel blessed to work with such great students and parents.
As I contemplated retirement this year, I struggled with the idea and the timing, but soon realized that there will never be a perfect time to retire. I will miss so many things about Sunset and everything that it entails. I will miss the students, and the parents, and the faculty. I will miss the day to day interactions the most. And I will certainly miss the performances. But even thinking about these things, I felt that it was as good of time as there was going to be. I always wanted to go out while I still loved what I was doing and that is a "for sure". I cannot thank the Longmont/Niwot community enough for 30 absolutely great years of teaching. I will be staying here in Longmont, maybe subbing a few days, and teaching some private lessons. I would love to continue to support the students that I've taught and am always available to come to a concert, sporting event, or anything they invite me to. I am just an email or phone call away. From the very bottom of my heart, Thank you!
